Hinduism And Hindu Theology - What Is Ashadh?

Ashadh is the fourth month of the lunar year, typically occurring between June and July, according to the lunar calendar, which is used to commemorate major Hindu religious events.

  • This is typically the warmest month of the year in northern India.
  • Yogini Ekadashi, the Rath Yatra, Devshayani Ekadashi, and Guru Purnima are the most important festivals of Ashadh.
  • The commencement of the Chaturmas Vrat is also marked as Devshayani Ekadashi.
  • This is a four-month (lunar) period that corresponds to the rainy season in most cases.
  • Because the deity Vishnu is thought to be “sleeping” at this time, the period is deemed unlucky.
