Hinduism - Who Are Child Widows?

This phrase refers to females who were married as youngsters and whose husbands (whether older men or younger boys) died before they reached puberty and the marriage was consummated.

Despite the fact that the lives of such child widows varied depending on the status of their families, given the customary restrictions on widow remarriage and the stringent behavioral standards imposed on widows, their lives were frequently very bleak.

Reformers such as Ram Mohan Roy championed the cause of social acceptability of second marriages for child widows in the nineteenth century.

Child widows are very rare in contemporary times due to the significant decrease in the number of child weddings.
