Paganism & Wicca - Who Is A Haljoruna?

Haljoruna is a Gothic word that means "witch."

According to Jordanes, a sixth-century Gothic historian, King Filimer of the Goths performed a census and uncovered numerous "witches" or haliorunnae, much to his dismay.

  • He sent these all-female witches to desolate places, where they had carnal encounters with desert spirits and gave birth to Hun offspring.
  • The narrative was written as a slap in the face to the Goths' rivals, the Pagan Huns.

Historians are intrigued by the account because of the similarities between "Haljoruna" and "Alrauna."

  • It's debatable if they're one and the same.
  • Haljoruna literally translates as "Hal (or Hulda) the runester" or "rune-caster," which might suggest ties to the divinity Hulda and/or runic magic.
