Paganism & Wicca - What Is Hoodoo?

Hoodoo, Hoodoo Doctor, Hoodoo Man, and Hoodoo Woman are all terms used to describe the practice of hoodoo

  • Hoodoo was formed when enslaved African magical practitioners were forced to invent a totally new botanical repertory to power their emergency magic due to a lack of customary materials.
  • These occultists illustrate the ideal of the searching, inquisitive occultist:
    • They gathered knowledge from all accessible sources, combined it with a West and Central African framework, and developed a strong new system of practical magic.
  • Hoodoo contains Native American, European, and Romany traditions, as well as Freemasonry, Kabalah, and Pow-Wow, in addition to African customs.
  • Hoodoo is a noun that may also be used as a verb:
    • • Hoodoo is the term given to a magical tradition.
    • • Hoodoo refers to the act of casting a spell: "I shall hoodoo you."
    • • Hoodoo is a term for a state of enchantment: "I've been hoodooed."
  • Hoodoo, unlike hex or jinx, is a neutral term: one may be Hoodooed with both love and curses.
  • Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic by Catherine Yronwode is recommended reading (Lucky Mojo, 2002).
