Hinduism - What Is Namakarana?

("name-giving") is a Sanskrit word that means "to give a name." Samskara The newborn infant is given a name at the fifth of the customary life-cycle rites (samskaras).

Although some observers think the rite should be performed on the day of birth, many others feel it should be performed on the tenth day, demonstrating a distinction between birth and the social ritual of naming.

Some people think that a kid's name should start with the first letter of the nakshatra (lunar zodiac sign) in which the child was born; this is still practiced in northern India.

Despite the fact that the traditional form of this ritual has largely gone out of favor, naming ceremonies remain a significant aspect of a child's birth.
