Hinduism - What Is Tarjini Hasta?

Tarjini hasta is the term for a hand gesture (hasta) in Indian dance, sculpture, and ritual in which the hand is closed save for the index finger, which is pointed upward as if to reprimand or punish the spectator.

The term tarjini comes from a verb that may mean "to threaten" or "to censure," both of which are implied by this gesture.

Hinduism - What Is The Tandava?

Tandava is a name for one of the two main types of Indian dance.

The tandava style is athletic and dramatic, conveying anger and force, whereas the lasya style is delicate and lyrical, conveying a love mood.

The tandava dance of the deity Shiva gave rise to the tandava style.

This is the dance in which Shiva destroys the world when the time has come, according to legend.

Not all legendary overtones of the dance are violent; this athletic dance is also claimed to be the one in which Shiva defeated the goddess Kali in a dancing competition when her feminine modesty prohibited her from mimicking his technique.

Hinduism - What Is Manipuri?

Bharatanatyam, Orissi, Kuchipudi, Kathak, and Kathakali are some of India's traditional dance traditions, as are Bharatanatyam, Orissi, Kuchipudi, Kathak, and Kathakali.

Classical dance, like most of traditional Indian culture, has strong regional identification; Manipuri is found exclusively in the state of Manipur in eastern India, situated between Burma and Assam.

Manipuri, which originated in the seventeenth century, displays the prominence of Vaishnava devotionalism.

Acting out incidents from the life of the deity Krishna, particularly the Ras lila and his dalliance with his sweetheart Radha, is one of the most popular dance styles.

Dancers play a two-headed drum or cymbals in other genres, jumping wildly throughout the performance.

This style has its origins in devout Vaishnavism, namely the passionate singing and dance associated with Bengal's Gaudiya Vaishnava group.

Mohan Khokar's Traditions of Indian Classical Dance, published in 1984, has further information.
