Utsava Murti translates as "Festival-Idol" in Sanskrit.
("picture from a festival") Image of a god who can
(and is supposed to) be moved.
These are often utilized during festivals, when the deity's
picture is carried about the town or city like a kingly procession,
symbolically inspecting his or her domain.
The sthala murti is another kind of Hindu picture that is
permanently placed in one location and never moves.
Temple Cars refers to the ceremonial carts on which a
deity's moveable image (utsava murti) may be moved across a town or, in the
case of temples in southern India, around the processional avenues that
frequently encircle the temple in concentric tiers.
