Hinduism - What Is Bidhai Samaroh?

"Farewell celebration," or Bidhai Samaroh is the ceremonial leaving of a new bride for her marital home in northern India.

This is a historic occasion for a variety of reasons.

  • Marriage is the beginning of a family, and a young woman's marriage gives her the chance to become a wife and mother, positions that are still seen as the greatest satisfaction and pleasure for women.
  • However, according to the Indian joint family's traditional paradigm, following marriage, a woman moves in with and becomes a member of her husband's family.
  • As a result, seeing off a new bride evokes mixed emotions: joy for her marriage and wishes for her good success, but also the realization that things have irrevocably altered.
