Paganism & Wicca - Who Is An Estrie?

Estrie is a term that comes from the Latin words strix and striga.

In mainstream culture, it was synonymous with hexe or "witch" by the early Middle Ages.

However, the term made its way into the Jewish community, where it took on new meanings—or, who knows, preserved old ones.

  • Lilith, as Queen of Demons and Witches, is related with the Jewish estrie, a liminal character.
  • The estrie is an evil magical practitioner, supernatural witch, demon-possessed woman, and hostile spiritual entity who straddles the line between evil magical practitioner, supernatural witch, demon-possessed woman, and evil spiritual entity.

Estrie may signify any, some, or all of these things depending on the location and community.

  • The estrie may change her appearance at any time.
  • She is said to be able to take on any shape, however black cats are her favorite.
  • The estrie is a vampiric vampire that feeds on human blood.
  • Although children are her favorite food, adults should not feel secure either.
  • The estrie is a clandestine organization.
  • The estrie will die unless she consumes some of that person's bread and salt if they injure her or realize her real form.

FOLKLORE: A man was attacked by a cat at night, according to folklore, but he fought back and fled. The following day, a battered-looking lady approached him and pleaded for salty bread.

He was going to hand it over to her when another guy objected, claiming that if he rescued the estrie, she would only do damage to others.
