Hinduism - What Is A Ghat?

A ghat is a bathing (snana) location beside a body of water, such as a river, lake, or pond, in its widest sense.

The term ghat also refers to the permanent buildings that have been constructed at these bathing spots.

A flat space near the water's edge, where people may stroll, stand, or sit, is generally included.

From the platform, a series of stairs goes into and under the water's surface.

Building a ghat is often seen as a virtuous deed that confers religious merit.

This is especially evident at pilgrimage sites (tirtha), where ghats are often used as public religious gathering places.
