Hinduism - What Is Vismaya Hasta?

Vismaya is a Sanskrit word that means "surprise."

Hasta - A hand gesture (hasta) in Indian dance, sculpture, and ritual in which the forearm and fingers point upward with the back of the hand turned toward the spectator.

This hasta is used to express any kind of surprise, such as amazement and astonishment.

Hinduism - What Is The Kataka Hasta?

A hand gesture (hasta) in which the tips of the fingers are loosely connected to the thumb to form a ring (the term kataka literally means "bracelet") in Indian dance, sculpture, and ritual.

This hasta is often seen in Hindu goddess depictions, but it also has a practical purpose: a new flower may be put into her palm every day.
