Hinduism - What Is A Kayasth?

Traditional Indian society was based around a collection of endogamous (intermarrying) clans called jatis ("birth").

The hereditary occupation of each group, over which each group had a monopoly, was used to arrange the jatis (and to establish their social standing).

The Kayasths were scribes and recorders for the local society, maintaining dated historic and factual documents detailing hereditary lines among other observations.

They were primarily responsible for keeping commercial and mercantile records, accounting, and ensuring that firms ran efficiently and successfully.
