Hinduism And Hindu Theology - What Is Alidhasana?

Alidhasana means "shooting position" in Sanskrit.

  • Certain figures in Hindu iconography have a specific bodily position (asana).
  • This is similar to how an archer draws a bow: one knee is flung forward, the other leg is pulled back, and the trunk is twisted in the direction of the front leg.
  • This position is often shown as the deity Shiva in his incarnation as Tripurari, "the Destroyer of the Triple City."

  • Rama is also shown in his fighting stance.
