Who Is Aditi?

'Firm, not falling'; 'unrestrained' Mother of the Adityas and a heavenly mother-goddess (Varuna, Mitra, Aryaman, Bhaga, Daksa, Amsa and possibly Tvastra).

Aditi depicts the sky as a vast expanse of space rather than a dazzling gleam.

She is an early personification of primordial darkness, yet she is actually an infinite abstraction.

While Aditi is often mistaken with Ushas or even Prithiv (Rigveda 1.72.9), she is a cosmic anti-mother who rejects her eighth son, Martanda/ Vivasvat the sun (10.72.8f), in favor of the Adityas, the supreme asuras.

Aditi and her progeny are preoccupied with sin and punishment, unlike the devas, who are embodiments of nature.

However, with the arrival of the devas, Aditi's powers are curtailed, and she becomes Diti, the mother of the post-rigvedic demons known as the Daityas.

Aditi is an abstract deity in Vedic Hinduism whose name means 'boundlessness.'

A set of gods in Hinduism who are all Aditi's sons. 

• Varuna is the most significant of them, with Mitra, Aryaman, Bhaga, Daksa, Amas, Dhatar, Indra, Vivasvant, Martanda, Surya, and Vishnu as his personified characteristics.

Hinduism And Hindu Theology - Who Is Aditi?

One of the wives of the sage Kashyapa, who also married Aditi's twelve sisters and begat all living things via them, according to Hindu legend. 

• Aditi is referenced for the first time in the Rig Veda, where she is one of the few female characters, although a minor one. 

• Dhata, Aryama, Mitra, Shakra (Indra), Varuna, Amsha, Bhaga, Vivasvan (Surya), Pushan, Savitr (Surya), Tvashtr, and Vishnu are the twelve divine sons mentioned in the Mahabharata. 

• Both the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, Hindu epics, tell how Aditi gave birth to the Vamana avatar, or deity Vishnu's "divine descend" in the shape of a dwarf.
