Hinduism - Who Was R. G. Bhandarkar?

R. G. Bhandarkar (1837–1925) was a Sanskrit scholar and thinker who was the first Indian to hold the position of Sanskrit professor at Poona's Deccan College.

Bhandarkar was one of the first Indian academics to integrate traditional Sanskrit text knowledge with critical and objective inquiry, a pursuit hitherto exclusive to European academics.

  • Bhandarkar represents the late-nineteenth-century Indian intellectuals who started by learning from Europeans and then went on to work alongside the finest of them.
  • Bhandarkar wrote two Sanskrit workbooks and many academic works, but the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, which he established in 1917 with the help of his students, friends, and fans, is still a highly regarded research organization today.
