("Humpbacked
Maidens' City") Or Kanauj, which was the capital of various northern Indian
kingdoms in the second millennium, was given this name by the ancients.
Kanyakubja gets its name from a legend about a monarch with
a hundred daughters.
The girls' activities one day interrupt a local sage's
meditation, which is filled with longing for them.
Ninety-nine of the king's daughters absolutely refuse to
marry the sage due to his ancient age and harsh personality, but the youngest
does so out of obedience to her father.
The sage takes the youngest daughter and curses the others,
making them humpbacked and preventing them from marrying.
