Hindu Architecture - What Is An Adhishthana?

It is a Sanskrit word that means "foundation."

  • The elevated foundation on which a temple was constructed in Hindu temple construction.
  • These are very high in the temples of Khajuraho, and their height emphasizes the buildings' upward thrust.
  • The Adhishthana is essential as the temple's foundation, the solid basis on which everything else relies, whether it is high or low.
