Paganism & Wicca - What Is An Akelarre?

Akerra or Akelarre is a Basque word that meaning "male goat."

  • Witch-hunters used the phrase as an euphemism for witches' sabbats, which they imagined to be presided over by a goat.
  • The phrase is most known as the title of Goya's witchcraft artwork, which shows witches with a big male goat.
  • In Castilian, the corresponding term is Aquelarre.
