Paganism & Wicca - What Is A Masca?

 

Masca is a Latin word that literally means "mask." It is a traditional Latin synonym for "witch." 


  • Masks were often worn by attendees of medieval witches' balls to conceal their identities; masks are also powerful magical instruments. 
  • The word is still used in Northern Italy as an euphemism for "witch." 


TOOLS: Masks; 


  • Larvatus,  Lar Masca, stria, striga, and strix were some of the Low Latin terms for "witch." 
  • The last three are known as strega in contemporary Italian.
