Hindu Iconography - What Is An Aniconic Image?

A deity symbol is a symbol that is used to symbolize a god.

  • Although human or animal likenesses are more often used to depict deities, some deities are represented by symbols or non-pictorial representations.
  • The linga and the shalagram, for example, are both well-known symbolic shapes of certain deities—Shiva and Vishnu, respectively.
