Hinduism - What Is An Atman?

In Sanskrit grammar, a reflexive pronoun may be used for all three persons in the singular and has the meaning of "self" or "oneself."

  • The word atman has also been used
to designate each human being's inner essence since the time of the mystical texts known as the Upanishads—which is eternal, unchanging, gives one a continuing identity in all of one's incarnations, and is ultimately identical to Brahman, the single source of all things in the universe.
