Hinduism - Who Is An Atita?

Atita means "I've gone beyond".

In its broadest sense, this phrase refers to an ascetic who has fully abandoned all possessions and therefore has "gone beyond" all social limits that bind ordinary people.

  • It's also the name of a low-caste society that includes both ascetics and householders.
