- The merrymaking and pranks that have become synonymous with the holiday are founded on supernatural beliefs.
- According to Druidic mythology, Saman, the Lord of Death, summoned the souls of evil men destined to assume animal forms at this time.
- Witches, demons, and spirits of the dead were said to congregate on this night.
