Hinduism - Who Is Balasaheb Deoras?

(1915–1996) The Rashtriya Svayamsevak Sangh (RSS) is the third sarsanghchalak ("Supreme Leader"), a conservative Hindu organization whose avowed mission is to produce the leadership cadre for a rejuvenated Hindu India.

Because the RSS is a very authoritarian organization that places a high value on adherence to authority, the sarsanghchalak has almost unlimited control over it.

From 1973 to 1994, Deoras was much more proactive than his predecessor, M.S. Golwalkar, notably in fostering the expansion of the RSS's associate organizations, giving the RSS a social service emphasis, and aggressively striving to recruit members and create shakhas (branches) around the nation.

See Walter K. Andersen and Shridhar D. Damle's The Brotherhood in Saffron (1987); Tapan Basu et alKhaki .'s Shorts and Saffron Flags (1993); and Christophe Jaffrelot's The Hindu Nationalist Movement in India (1996) for further details.
