Hinduism - Who Was Gosala Maskariputra?

(5th c. B.C.E.?) A philosopher who lived during the Buddha's lifetime, according to legend.

Gosala is said to be the founder of the Ajivikas, a defunct religious society known for its fatalistic philosophy.

In Buddhist and Jain literature, he is known as Makkhali Gosala ("cow-shed"), a reference to his humble origins.
