behind") Balarama's epithet refers to his extraordinary prenatal
development, in which he is conceived by Krishna's mother Devaki but
miraculously transferred into the womb of her co-wife Rohini.
This is done to keep him safe, since Devaki's evil uncle
Kamsa has already slain her previous seven children and would undoubtedly kill
Balarama if she brings him to term.
