Hinduism - What Is Smallpox Link To Goddess Shitala?

 


Smallpox was personified as the goddess Shitala ("Cool One," a euphemism) in ancient Hindu mythology, and the fever and skin eruptions associated with the sickness were understood as symptoms of possession by this goddess.

Shitala has been misdiagnosed with TB in certain areas after the World Health Organization proclaimed smallpox to be officially eliminated.
