Hinduism - What Is A Utsava Murti?

Utsava Murti translates as "Festival-Idol" in Sanskrit.

("picture from a festival") Image of a god who can (and is supposed to) be moved.

These are often utilized during festivals, when the deity's picture is carried about the town or city like a kingly procession, symbolically inspecting his or her domain.

The sthala murti is another kind of Hindu picture that is permanently placed in one location and never moves.
