Hinduism - Who Was The Indian Magadha King Bimbisara?

Bimbisara (d. 494 B.C.E.) was the King of Magadha, which corresponds to modern-day Bihar, whose rule ended just before the Buddha's death date was generally recognized.

Bimbisara was a zealous administrator with ambitions to rule over a vast empire.

  • He attempted to conquer and rule vast swaths of the Ganges basin to achieve this goal.
  • Bimbisara is said to be the first monarch to dream of governing a vast kingdom, but he was overthrown and killed by his son Ajatashatru before it came to pass.
