Pagan Religions - Where Is ANURADHAPURA?

The town was established in 437 B.C. and served as Ceylon's capital and one of the world's most significant Buddhist centers for four centuries.

An ancient bo tree, said to be the world's oldest living historical tree, may still be found there.

  • According to the species' self-reproductive powers, it may be a descendant of the bo tree planted there by Tissa (Devanampiyatissa), a Sinhalese king converted to Buddhism by Mahinda, the son of Emperor Asoka, a devout Indian Buddhist.
  • To commemorate his conversion, Tissa and his followers erected many temples and shrines.
